Global crises, such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, show the importance of communicating science to the public. We introduce the YouTube channel "Wissenschaft fürs Wohnzimmer", which livestreams presentations on climate-related topics weekly and is accessible to all. The project encourages interaction between scientists and the public and has been running successfully for over 2 years. We present the concept, what we have learnt, and the challenges after 100 streamed episodes.

There are many approaches to better understanding Antarctic processes that generate very large data sets (Antarctic big data). For these large data sets there is a pressing need for improved data acquisition, curation, integration, service, and application to support fundamental scientific research, and this article describes and evaluates the current status of big data in various Antarctic scientific disciplines, identifies current gaps, and provides solutions to fill these gaps.

Polar research is an interdisciplinary and multi-faceted field of research. Its diversity ranges from history to geology and geophysics to social sciences and education. This article provides insights into the different areas of German polar research. This was made possible by a seminar series, POLARSTUNDE, established in the summer of 2020 and organized by the German Society of Polar Research and the German National Committee of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS Germany).

The 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP), hosted by the International Permafrost Association (IPA), brought together researchers from all over the world in Puigcerdà, Spain, on 18–22 June 2023. The conference covered a number of relevant aspects of permafrost research. This is a report from five early-career researchers who attended the conference and presented their research.

There are different ways to study the icy continent of Antarctica. One way to understand various processes in Antarctica or to investigate the future of the ice sheet under climate change, is to build a computer model. Several steps are needed to represent how ice flows inside a model. These include for example the derivation of the physical equations, the construction of a coordinate system and the choice of boundary conditions.

Seit 1991 bis 2014 untersucht der Erstautor die Eishöhenänderung am Swiss Camp in Grönland. 2015 und 2021 wurden die Höhen von Schlittengruppen gemessen, so dass die Messreihe auf 30 Jahre ausgedehnt wurde. Vor 2014 ergab sich eine stark beschleunigte Höhenabnahme. Seit 2014 bis 2021 zeigt sich eine geringere Höhenabnahme. Verantwortlich sind Änderungen der Lufttemperatur und der Albedo. Diese Höhenänderungen stimmen überein mit Befunden mittels Satellitengravimetrie GRACE.

Als Georg Neumayer zum Hydrographen bei der neu gegründeten Kaiserlichen Admiralität berufen worden war, hatte er schon Kontakt zu Wilhelm Foerster, der maßgeblich die Gründung von wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen auf dem Potsdamer Telegraphenberg betrieb. Der Kontakt war anfangs sehr eng, wegen anderer Aufgaben Neumayers schränkten sich die Mögllchkeiten der Zusammenarbeit etwas ein.

In his diary, the carpenter Wilhelm Heinrich described the emerging tensions between some scientists, the ship's management and the sailors during the voyage of the second German Antarctic Expedition (1911) to Buenos Aires. Together with three additional travel accounts, a vivid picture of social conditions during the first leg of the voyage aboard the Deutschland emerges for the first time, about which Filchner's official voyage report says little.

Drygalski führte in den Jahren 1891 und 1892/93 Forschungsarbeiten in Westgrönland durch, wobei zur Überwinterung eine Forschungsstation am Großen Karajak-Gletscher errichtetet wurde. An gleicher Stelle erfolgten durch die TU Dresden 2007 und 2019 geodätische Feldarbeiten. Im Beitrag werden das Areal der damaligen Station sowie die Forschungsarbeiten Drygalskis vorgestellt. Ein Vergleich mit heutigen Messungen zeigt, dass sich der Große Karajak-Gletscher in 120 Jahren kaum verändert hat.
